About Me

Described as a place that etches the senses and imprints memories that last a lifetime, Modesto’s historic State Theatre has witnessed many nostalgic moments with many characters over seventy-two years and now enters its most promising chapter supported by a most impressive and distinguished group of caring and committed citizens dedicated to nurturing and presenting the arts in the Central Valley.

Masterfully restored gold leaf murals set the tone of this charming art deco theatre dating back to 1934 when it opened on Christmas Day with “Flirtation Walk, ” starring Ruby Keeler and Dick Powell. Designed by one of the most prolific and respected motion picture theatre designers, S. Charles Lee, the State Theatre of Modesto has continued to adapt to the needs of this dynamic community. With only 580 seats, the State Theatre offers a luxuriously intimate cinema and concert experience like no other in the region.

  • When we asked ardent Star Wars fans which episode to bring to The State’s Big Screen, the resounding reply was A New Hope – judged by some to be one of the best films of all time! Join us – and hundreds of other Star Wars nerds – for George Lucas’ 1977, Oscar-winning epic that drops you into the middle of an intergalactic war between an empire and a rebellion that’s raged for years and left the universe in ruins. Come dressed as your favorite cast member, many of whom are considered to be among the greatest characters of all time: Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness), a Jedi on the run from the evil empire; Han Solo (Harrison Ford), a smuggler and thief who helps rescue Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher); and Darth Vader (the voice of James Earl Jones), one of the Silver Screen’s badest, bad guys ever. Be sure and arrive at 5:30 when the doors open because Darth Vader and the amazing 501 Storm Troopers will be on hand to greet you! And don’t worry about grabbing dinner on the way. The State is selling pizza by the slice so, we’ve got you covered. Tues. July 26 at 6 p.m. Tickets are $7.

  • On Saturday, May 16, The State is throwing its own birthday party and you’re invited, along with your family, friends and neighbors.  Join us at 11 a.m. when festivities kick off with an organ concert, courtesy of Kyle Barker on The State’s Hammond Elegante, followed by the premiere of The State’s documentary, The Show Starts on the Sidewalk, by Wes Page. Next enjoy classic cartoons followed by cake, root beer floats and The State’s famous popcorn, all of which are on the house! In the afternoon, it’s more balloons, cartoons and action-packed serials from the ‘50s. Admission is free to this all-ages party so, bring the entire family and celebrate The State, the community’s home for film, arts and entertainment since 1934.
    Saturday, May 16, 2009 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Admission is free for this all-ages event!

  • Thanks a lot!  I’m really looking forward to it being a great place for the community to share and connect.  I have a lot more features planned so stay tuned! :)
